After confirming that Cyberpunk 2077 will have romance gameplay, one of the big questions about it is whether the game will feature same-sex romances. On Twitter, a fan asked if there would be both male and female options and if players would be able to romance them “regardless of gender.” CD Projekt RED’s senior communications manager Robert Malinowski responded “yes.”
In an interview with Eurogamer, CD Projekt RED shared more on the game’s romance gameplay, elaborating on the inclusion of same-sex romances. Quest designer Patrick Mills told the publication that “While many of the characters you can romance in our game are bisexual, not all of them are.” Romance options in the game will have “preferences,” said Mills, as “we want them to feel like living people with histories.”
As for how the romance will play out, the Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay demo that’s being shown off at E3 2018 briefly shows the player character after they’ve had a one-night stand. In addition to one-night stands, players will also be able to have “long-lasting” relationships, says Mills. Speaking to press at the demo event, CD Projekt RED described the game as “a mature experience intended for mature audiences,” meaning that players can expect nudity throughout their playthroughs as well.
CD Projekt RED has yet to show off any of the romance gameplay to a public audience (the demo has so far only been shown behind closed door) but fans are still excited by the confirmation that Cyberpunk 2077 will have same-sex romances.
Cyberpunk 2077 also becomes one of several games at E3 to offer LGBTQ representation. The Last of Us Part 2‘s new trailer features a lesbian kiss, for example, while Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has same-sex romances which were also shown off in gameplay footage (included in that post). Things are far from perfect when it comes to LGBTQ representation in games, but we’ve certainly come a long way.
