One of the most difficult games we played last year, Iron Fisticle ruined thumbs, frayed tempers and got lodged in everyone’s noggins with its catchy retro soundtrack. A twin stick shooter with a total lack of checkpoints (death sends you right back to the beginning of the level), not even the extra health pips or the better weapons available in the in-game shop could save your genderless knight from being killed off. The game was immensely fun but for many that difficulty may have been off-putting. Good news then that in the latest Iron Fisticle update the game is adding a challenge mode and three new difficulties for masochists and those who want an easier time playing it, respectively.
While graphics, platforms and the games industry as a whole may have changed, three core principles remain true. One, shooting waves of enemies in the face remains awesome. Two, getting out of a pinch when said enemies become threatening will make you feel like a god. And three, you never stop loving the way your heart beats in your chest when you almost died but you just about lived on to complete the level instead. When a game can do this to perfection then you know you’re onto a winner and lucky for us that twin-stick shooter Iron Fisticle is a very good example of this indeed.
