“You were going to a class reunion. It should have been a fantastic party… but you suddenly realise that there are monsters everywhere, and they are after you!” That’s how upcoming indie beat-em-up, Final Exam, is described by Francois Potentier, CEO of Mighty Rocket Studio, the dev team behind the game, on the PlayStation Blog. But, as they say, ‘one protagonist’s highly unfortunate life-threatening situation is another gamer’s treasure’ because Final Exam will be bringing its 2.5D (read: 2D levels with 3D characters) side-scrolling antics to PSN and XBLA next month.
The premise of Final Exam is of a high school reunion gone very, very wrong (or totally right if you’re not a fan of social get together) that pits four characters with corresponding personality/attack moves against hordes of monsters. These potential protagonists and their “classic teen archetypes” include: Brutal Joe the jock and his power moves, Nathan the nerd with his tech skills, Sean the handsome guy with his aptitude for guns and Cassy the dancer who attacks, of course, with dance moves. Mighty Rocket are a 9 person team who formed just to put Final Exam (their very first game) together and from what we can tell from the trailer, their dedication seems to be paying off.
